接觸作業系統有好長一段日子的朋友們應該都知道，windows作業系統的檔案格式從DOS的年代的fat16、fat32，到現在的NTFS。前前後後已經二、三十年的歷史，而且所指是DOS及windows的檔案格式而已。其他像Linux、Solaris、Unix及Mac等等的作業系統檔案格式又是不一樣的，可能很多人連聽都沒聽過。

為何需要fat32的檔案格式呢?

既然NTFS檔案格式已經是現在主流是的檔案格式，那為何不就此使用NTFS的格式，而要反其道而行將其format成fat32呢?網路上有很多文章與知識家可以告訴你，NTFS及fat32的檔案格式不同的地方在哪裡，在此就不多做說明。到底為何還是有很多fat32的格式需要呢?DS收集如下：

1. 特殊用儀器設備需求：工作上經常會接觸老舊機器，因為系統封閉完全無法升級，所以檔案格式需求只限於fat32。
2. 系統轉換需求：fat32屬於windows舊格式，所以在不同作業系統平台上幾乎都可以支援直接讀取。對於不同系統之間的溝通可以當成一個橋樑。(假設我想複製Solaris的檔案到windows系統中時)
3. 用不習慣NTFS格式的時候：普遍用慣fat32的人感受不到NTFS保護機制的優點時，在fat32轉NTFS格式的風險承擔的情況下。
4. 特殊軟體使用時：有部分的軟體無法讀取NTFS格式，但你又有軟體使用需求時。

fat32format是一個相當小，使用簡單且強力的工具軟體，允許格式化超大型的硬碟。目前DS測試過最大的硬碟為1T，格式化過程相當快速，不需要花太多的時間就可以完成fat32的格式化作業。

fat32format的使用過程：

1. 開啟一個Dos指令視窗，並切換至C:\底下
2. fat32format f:   (開始格式化電腦偵測到的硬碟f)
3. 底下為格式化出現的訊息。

You should see this displayed

Warning ALL data on drive ‘f’ will be lost irretrievably, are you sure (y/n)
Now when it says this, it really means it. If you format the boot sector, FATs and root directory will be filled with zeros. By typing pressing Y and hitting return, you’re also absolving me of liability for whatever was on the disk before.
